Writing Prompt Wednesday:The Parking Lot

According to my “On the Day” Facebook app, I posted this last year:

“I’m not feeling well today. I have finally succumbed to whatever virus has been making everyone else in my family miserable this winter.”

Interestingly enough, this could have been my post today as well. My children have sick more often this winter than ever before, but I have stayed healthy until this week. I could give you a detailed description of what my throat feels like today, but I will spare you, since this is not a medical journal!

Anyway, I feel about not posting anything the past few days and being late with the writing prompt, but at long last, here it is!

I get off the elevator and walk through the lobby, thrilled to be leaving work on time for once. I step out into the sunshine of a scorching hot July day, the heat of the pavement soaking into my feet, despite my expensive leather shoes. Strangely enough, I see huge flocks of birds flying overhead, more consistent with fall than summer.

As I open my car door, I look down and see a swarm of ants, all running together in an orderly group away from the building towards the woods at the far end of the parking lot. Then I see deer – at least ten – run across the edge of the forest. I shake my head, wondering why all the animals are acting so strangely. Perhaps a storm is coming, I think as I sit down in my car. Then it all went black.

Finish the story in as little as one sentence or as many as you want! Happy writing!

  1. At first I thought I’d passed out, but quickly realized I simply couldn’t see anything. In an instinctual gesture, I felt for my phone on the passenger seat beside me. Its screen lit up immediately, reassuring me that my eyes hadn’t stopped working but leading to another more frightening question: Why had the world gone dark? The little icon on the phone screen indicated I had no cellular service. I fumbled with my keys, switching on the car battery and hitting the button for the radio. Nothing but static. I eased my way out of the car and walked up the ramp to the exit door, using my phone to light the way. Stumbling a bit in my slightly oversized heels, I pushed the door open and stepped outside.
